University Place is an amazing facility. The staff are very caring, friendly, and concerned about your loved ones. My husband was in the memory care unit admitted for permanent placement. He received all therapies while there. There are always activities for the residents. Sure felt like home. He has done so well that he just returned home to live. That was not the original plan. I am a nurse and visit many facilities in my travels as a hospice nurse and I highly recommend University Place as one of the best.

No. Do not take your loved one here. At least not to the assisted living/nursing home wing. I cannot speak for the independent living apartments. They will never have enough staff to adequately handle the needs of the residents. The place is extremely expensive as well. It looks great from the outside, but the minute you leave your loved one there who knows how often they will have an aid come in to check on them. It could be twice a day or less. If your loved one cannot ask for dinner, they may not receive it. It could be 1-3 hours after everyone else, if they do. If your loved one needs full assistance to eat, use the bathroom, walk, etc. considered them last on the list, everyday. Honestly. If your loved one is placed at the end of a hallway, that’s bad news too. Your family does not deserve to go to somewhere where the turnover rate of aids is VERY high. That means it is hard for them to build relationships with the residents. If your loved one is very independent then the independent living apartments could be a good fit for them. Otherwise, do not take your loved one here. If your loved one has to be put on hospice while here that’s even worse. There will be a constant back-and-forth of nurses/aids saying “that’s hospice’s job” and hospice saying “that’s the facility’s job”, therefore leaving your loved one neglected. Unfortunately, there are not many options in West Lafayette I hear are better, but from our experience this facility was not what it appeared to be from the outside. The online ratings were also deceiving. You are better off hiring an in-home nurse and paying $15-20/hour to receive house cleaning, errand running, etc. in addition to the 24-hour care needed for your loved one.
