The care and attention to detail is substantially below expectations. The sales job and upfront promises are not consistent with the service provided in memory care. Non-existent management follow through on promises, multiple mistakes in medication delivery, staff that is more focused on their telephones than resident care, all make for a poor living experience for the resident.

Response from the owner

Steve, we welcome feedback in striving for service excellence, so please know that we take your critique seriously. However, as attested by many resident-families, the MorningStar team has proven time and again to be conscientious and compassionate. Our company mission insists on nothing less. Leaders model high accountability, competence and character—the hallmarks of the MorningStar culture—for our valued frontline. We sincerely apologize for coming up short in your estimation. Wishing you well!

After nearly a year in the memory care unit, I moved my loved one to a different facility. The fundamental problem is management. After finding my mom covered in feces, often left alone in her room during meals, no laundry done for weeks, medication mistakes, I tried multiple times to ask for help from the executive director and the memory care director. Even though they appeared to listen and show compassion during care plan meetings, there was absolutely no change in staff behavior and no follow up. The staff spend much of their time on their phones instead of caring to resident needs. I spent several nights with my mother and never received the wellness check we were promised. While very friendly, the memory care "director" has absolutely no qualifications and no understanding of dementia care. Christmas dinner consisted of a boxed meal with a dry turkey sandwich, a bag of chips and a prepackaged pudding cup. The sales and marketing personnel do an excellent job of selling a place of luxury style care that emanates safety and compassion. The reality is a facility motivated by profit at the expense of the dignity the residents deserve.

Response from the owner

Nancy, we are distressed to read this review. We respect your opinions and welcome feedback. Indeed, we met with you many times in the past year to hear and address concerns. Our own records and experiences stand in contrast with these allegations of neglect. Your mother’s personal preferences and right to choose also played a role. Please know she was well cared for, making positive connections with other residents, and happily participating in Community Life. Our Resident Care Coordinator is a Certified Dementia Practitioner with a decade of professional experience. There are few people more knowledgeable in caring for those with cognitive loss. On Christmas, breakfast and a lavish buffet was served, so the evening meal was simple. Even then, the kitchen was not closed, and options were given to all. We wish your family nothing but the best!

Do not put anyone you love in this place. The neglect and abuse my mother endured here was criminal.

Response from the owner

RA, it is distressing to read your review! We do not recognize your name in our records nor are aware of a resident-family under any surname who is dissatisfied. The MorningStar brand entirely rests on compassion, competence and character. Please give us a chance to understand the situation you describe by calling Executive Director Conor at 720.545.1575.

We found Morningstar to be a wonderful caring and compassionate community for our mom. The entire staff welcomed her and us. Conor and his team provided exceptional care in all phases of short term care two years ago and then her final care needs for assisted living. They went the extra mile helping move back in within a week of our new plans with accurate and timely communication. Then the staff remembering her name; always with a gentle and loving touch. We were blessed to have her reside with this group of people. Thank you Conor and all the team.

Response from the owner

Mark, thank you for sharing your heartfelt experience! We're thrilled to hear that our team, especially Conor, provided such compassionate care for your mom. It's wonderful to know that our team made a lasting impact. Your kind words truly inspire us to continue delivering exceptional service. We are blessed to be able to serve your family and mom!

My dad lived in Boulder for 30 years. He moved himself into Morningstar's memory care unit as dementia started to take hold. Morningstar is heavy on marketing and low on delivery of care. Visiting we'd find my dad naked and scared with poop around his unit. In some cases, it seemed he'd been left that way for days. Abandoned in his room my dad would miss meals. Though he could still walk, the manager Roccio wanted him drugged and confined to a wheel chair. Ultimately Morningstar required 24x7 care from a 3rd party for him, bringing the cost to a staggering $50k/month. Morningstar kicked him out with a one month notice. When I was moving his things out, I encountered the director, Conor. I stopped in front of him in the hall to speak about the horrible things he'd done to my father. He refused to stop and walked around me. Presumably Morningstar is some horrid private equity, profit driven beast. If you need similar services, I'd go somewhere smaller and more human. Don't believe the brochures of dancing old people and calendars of activities. None of it is real. The reality is drugs, wheelchairs and blank staring at a television. My dad is now in a five person care home run by a doctor. He's cared for, clothed and fed. That care home doesn't have salespeople or marketing brochures. It does have care, something Morningstar is unable and unwilling to provide.

Response from the owner

Ben, we apologize for the distress that led to your choice of words. Representing the MorningStar brand with integrity is our chief obligation in accord with our mission and core values. We take seriously any impression to the contrary. Our leadership gathered to review your father’s residency so to respond fairly. While professional ethics prevent us from speaking to specifics, your allegations are untrue. He was fully ambulatory and at no point did we encourage wheelchair use. We want residents to be as independent as possible. No one on the MorningStar team, nurses included, are permitted to prescribe medications; we are licensed only to dispense those prescribed by a physician. Residents are checked on hourly. Private caregivers are often used in assisted living when around-the-clock supervision is the only option for a resident’s safety. You’ll recall countless care conferences with our Executive Director to discuss interventions we were trying with consultation from the local ombudsman. We believe we navigated the challenging balance of his comfort and safety with the well-being of other residents, approaching the situation with empathy and respect. We wish you well.
